Grey Herons, Muncaster Castle, 16th October 2011
Not much birding this weekend, a walk along the cliff-top path at St Bees Head
in Cumbria with Wheatear, Raven and Peregrine being the highlights. On the way
home we called at Muncaster Castle for the afternoon. Unknown to me was
the feeding of Grey Herons every afternoon, fed on the dead chicks left over from
feeding the various Owls at the aviary there.
Around 25 were present, giving close views as the dead chicks were put out onto
the ground.

New Brighton 8th October 2011
Leach's Petrel was the target bird for myself and Mark Fanshawe today
with the first sighted at 10.05 and another seven seen before we left, around
2.15pm. The winds weren't from the most favourable direction for the site
but we saw them all the same! 2 Med's and 3 Little Gulls, 2 Guillemot,
2 Common Scoter and singles of Gannet, Arctic Tern and Kittiwake
were also seen. A late Wheatear was on the seawall.
Afterwards, we called in at Inner Marsh Farm RSPB and the newly opened
Burton Mere Wetlands. 5 curlew Sandpiper, Hen Harrier, Peregrine, Med'
Gull, 3 Greenshank and Ruff were present.

Solitary Sandpiper, Nateby, 2nd October 2011
Wow, what a bird and only forty minutes from home. It seemed like all of
Lancashires' birders came out for this one and no surprise there due to the birds rarity.
The bird was very distant and the light wasn't too good either, in spite of this, reasonable
scope views at 60x were obtained as it fed on a flooded field.
It flew short distances a few times while i was there, showing the crucial, all-dark rump.
My attempts at digi-scoping are very poor but at least i got something!

With Buff-breasted and Pectoral Sandpipers' at the same site and only an hour from
home, i couldn't resist twitching them. I took my niece Amelia along with me for a day
out. Around a dozen other birders were on site when we arrived mid-morning
and found the Buff-breast showing well along with a small assortment of other Waders.
Curlew Sandpiper, 2 Little Stint, several Dunlin and Ringed Plover were around
but no sign of the two Pec's unfortunately.
An hour later and highlights from the Eric Morecambe/Allen Pools complex were
Green and another Curlew Sandpiper along with Spotted Redshank, and several Ruff.
Amelia was very excited at seeing her first Peregrine sat on a post and told most people
in the hide so!
Later in the afternoon we tried for the Otters that had been showing from the public
hide at Leighton Moss earlier in the day. As expected, we didn't see them but a flock of
15 Little Egrets and very close views of feeding Dragonflies almost made up for the non-
sighting.
